Alvin

In today’s spotlight, we delve into the inspiring journey of Alvin, a fitness professional with over 4 years of experience, whose path to success began on the football field and ultimately led him to become a personal trainer.

Early Years and Football Background

Alvin’s journey begins with his early years deeply rooted in the world of football. He played at a commendable level, showcasing dedication and commitment to the sport he loved. However, there came a pivotal moment when he found himself at a crossroads. The progression in his football career seemed to stagnate within the non-league circuit.

It was during a nine-month hiatus from the game that Alvin took the opportunity to introspect and explore new interests. This period of self-reflection led him to discover a newfound passion for fitness. The desire to become a personal trainer began to spark within him.

A Shift in Focus

While employed at Asics, a sportswear company, Alvin started to explore his passion for the gym and fitness. He had a basic understanding of fitness concepts but felt a strong urge to dive deeper into this field. He saw the potential for personal training not only to enhance his own fitness journey but also to pave the way for a new career.

The motivation to bridge the gap between theory and practice became a driving force in Alvin’s life. He decided to rejoin his football team, playing semi-pro part-time while dedicating himself to honing his personal training skills. Alvin believed that applying his newfound knowledge to enhance his physical performance on the football field was a key part of his development as a trainer.

Intriguingly, Alvin reflects on his independent mindset, expressing a strong desire to explore new avenues without relying on external validation. He found that personal training was the natural evolution of his interests beyond football.

Qualifications and Discovery of Focus Fitness UK

Alvin shares that his connection with a friend, Byron, who worked with Focus Fitness UK, introduced him to the vibrant community and educational opportunities provided by this institution. The camaraderie between Alvin and Byron, and shared experiences solidified Alvin’s decision to embark on the journey of becoming a personal trainer.

Alvin highlights his enjoyment of the process of qualifying as a personal trainer and how his genuine curiosity and eagerness to learn propelled him forward in the fitness industry. He emphasises that his fitness tutor at Focus Fitness UK remains a valuable resource, always ready to share insights.

Focus Fitness UK, in essence, taught Alvin about freedom—the freedom to pursue his passion without overthinking. This philosophy has deeply influenced his approach to fitness and life in general. With four years of experience under his belt since he began his qualifications in March 2019, Alvin’s journey serves as a powerful example of the transformation that can occur when passion and dedication are combined.

The Branding Game

An intriguing aspect of Alvin’s success lies in his ability to transform himself into a brand. “Always Working” (A.W.), derived from his initials, became more than just a name; it became synonymous with dedication, consistency, and a relentless commitment to personal growth. Alvin’s branding plays a powerful role in how people perceive him.

Innovations During Lockdown

The onset of the pandemic presented numerous challenges, but Alvin approached this period with an open mind and a determination to innovate. He initiated Instagram live workouts during the lockdown, starting with a modest viewership that rapidly grew as more people sought fitness inspiration during these trying times.

Alvin’s dedication to providing value for free not only kept him motivated but also resonated with an increasingly larger audience.

As the pandemic rules faded, Alvin shares how he kept busy with around four sessions daily, working five days a week, and occasionally pushing himself to five or more sessions in a single day. The numbers added up to around 38 sessions, resulting in a hectic yet rewarding schedule.

This phase was a moment of realisation for Alvin—he didn’t want to work for a gym or anyone else. He knew he could make it on his own terms. Life had a good taste, and he was determined to savour it. The ease he felt was not about having everything figured out; it was about embracing the wild possibilities and opportunities that lay ahead.

Alvin’s experience was built in well-known fitness establishments such as Pure Gym, The Gym Group, Nuffield Health, and David Lloyd. This resulted in him wanting to establish his own business in a private studio located near his home.

Here, Alvin operates as a fully self-employed trainer, relishing the freedom to curate both his training space and clientele. This transition marks a pivotal moment in his career, allowing him to apply his unique approach to personal training.

Entrepreneurial Insights

The conversation underscores the idea that personal training is not just a means to earn a fixed monthly wage but an avenue to explore a multitude of opportunities. Alvin shares insights from a friend’s success in conducting online classes, which opened his eyes to the various possibilities that existed. This friend’s three classes a week translated into a substantial income, demonstrating that diversified approaches could lead to financial stability.

The prospect of adding sports massage to his repertoire excites Alvin. It’s not merely about expanding services but creating a holistic experience for his clients. Nutrition is another realm he’s ventured into, crafting meal plans for clients during a period of personal recovery. His ability to be a man of many skills is his asset, showcasing that specialisation has its merits, but versatility brings more in the way of opportunities for him.

In the future, Alvin envisions combining fitness with his cousin’s culinary skills, offering a unique post-session experience. For example, serving Caribbean stew after a session would be a dream come true.

Alvin’s Approach to his Fitness Business

Alvin stresses the importance of taking action without overthinking. He encourages the mindset of “just go do it” and learning from the experience, highlighting the value of trying, adapting, and continuously evolving. His approach is grounded in the belief that one only truly loses when they fail to learn from an experience. Alvin shares anecdotes from his boot camps, where only two people showed up, leading him to realise the shortcomings in his marketing approach. This experience, like many others, became a valuable lesson that contributed to his growth as a business owner.

Alvin emphasises the value of in-person interactions and genuine conversations over just being digitally present. These conversations, he notes, can lead to conversions and are essential for building a thriving fitness business.

The discussion wraps up with Alvin’s acknowledgment of the importance of attitude. He underscores the idea that a winning attitude is not just about reaching the goal; it’s about learning from both successes and failures. Alvin’s journey, from the football field to establishing his private set-up and navigating the challenges of the pandemic, exemplifies resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to growth.
