For 14% of Brits, Valentine’s day symbolises chocolate. If only there was a way to not feel so guilty about all the chocolate indulgent? Well, there is and what better way to start the day off than with a workout to have you feeling fresh and invigorated for the evening. Morning workouts can improve your metabolism and improve your physical and mental energy for the rest of the day. But an even better way to improve your workout and spice it up is to train with your partner. In this blog, we look into why couples that gym together, win together. Let’s slip right into it:

Motivation

When testing whether an individual’s motivation for aerobic exercise is increased by the presence of a partner, a 2012 study found “participants exercised significantly longer working out with a buddy” and exercising with a partner present “can improve performance on an aerobic exercise task across multiple sessions”. The study found that choosing a partner who you perceive to be a better performer than you could increase your workout time and intensity by as much as 200%, provided you have the ideal partner suited to you of course.

Less risk of injury

Training with your partner can also be a great way of keeping your form and technique in check so you don’t injure yourself, additionally, you’ll able assist when an exercise/lift gets a little more difficult. For example, you could monitor your partner’s back during a squat, or they can stand on guard during your 1RM (1 rep max) bench press test. Mirrors are great in the gym, but a gentle spot from a partner whom you trust can go a long way.

You can try a new workout or class

Surrounding yourself by friends will make you less intimidated about starting a new activity that you may hesitate to do alone. It is a lot easier to start using the gym, hitting the free weights or taking a new class with a friend by your side, especially your partner. The same goes for starting a new diet plan, when both of you are committed, you can challenge support each other to stay consistent.

There’s always room for improvement

When training for fitness, there is always room for improvement — even if you have already reached your desired fitness level, you can always set a new one out of your comfort zone. For example, you might be training with a bodybuilding regimen whereas your partner focusses on CrossFit style workouts, perhaps you both try the other’s workout style to learn something new.
