A personal trainer is more than just a facilitating guide towards your fitness goals, they are also your ride or die and can sometimes be your coach for life depending on who you have chosen to support you along your journey. A common misconception is that many people see a personal trainer as an intimidating figure, someone who will train them incredibly hard and work them into the ground, no slack allowed. Wrong, well apart from the last bit, training isn’t about annihilation it’s about activation, activating the muscle you intend to work and sometimes it can be challenging all this work yourself, which is why it is more effective and efficient to delegate the workload to a personal trainer. Allow me to explain why:
- They can notice imbalances that you won’t
With regards to your fitness and physique (body composition) a personal trainer will be able to look at you objectively and notice imbalances or weak points to help you further progress. Having a second perspective notice these minor or major aspects can help shape you into the physique you are aiming for and also help prevent injury by noticing and correcting potential weak points which could cause problems further down the line if left undiscovered.
- Shock principle
With a second mind planning your next workout, you are left unprepared, which can have positive effects on your performance providing your self motivation is above par, this is known as the shock principle. In brief, the shock principle states that with a sudden change in training i.e: tarining systems, sets, reps, exercises etc, you are shocking the body’s muscles as you are forcing them to adapt. The principle is generally used to break plateaus, but definitely proves useful year round in preventing plateaus before they start.
- A trainer will save you time
It takes a significant amount time planning workouts, programs, nutrition guides, training phases and more. It is also particularly hard to carry out these tasks when you lack the necessary knowledge, so it much more productive to delegate these tasks to a trainer who will prep all the behind the scenes work for you, plus they’ll do a fine job of it.
- They are a dictionary for fitness
On your fitness journey you’ll inevitably encounter a physical or mental barrier which will spark the initial stages of a plateau, and generally it can take a unnecessarily long time to research and work around these barriers. Instead it is much more efficient to find a personal trainer who will already have the knowledge to help you break through all types of fitness related barriers.
- Life coach
Feel free to confide in your trainer, a good trainer will put their best interests at heart when they are guiding you, whether it be fitness related or not. The idea is that a personal trainer’s goal is to help you progress successively with regards to fitness, but as personal trainers we also believe success in fitness can translate to success in life.
“A personal trainer’s goal is to believe in you until you can believe in yourself.”
